80/20 Rule Of Interior Design

I am always asked if you can mix decor styles together. Chances are your home has evolved over the years so you have already collected things in different styles. Some you want to keep and some you want to switch up, without replacing everything.

Mix Things Up

It’s easy to get caught in a rut decorating everything within the same style. The rooms can tend to look a bit boring and expected. Don’t be afraid to mix the old with the new. Mix up the textures and shapes. Keeping the proper scale is very important. Notice how everything is large in this vignette, even though they are from different styles.

80/20 Rule

Try to remember the 80/20 rule. 80% of one style and 20% of another style. In this case the gold round mirror and matte black vase were modern but all the other furniture was traditional. The pink magnolias soften everything and make the vignette work.

Don’t Copy

Everyone loves looking at online beautiful photos and then they try to copy them since they aren’t sure what else to do. I suggest you experiment for yourself. Showcase the things you love and work them into your space. By following my design principals you will always get a room that you love. Notice I didn’t say a “completed room”? That’s because your house should evolve as much as you do. It’s a representation of who you are.
